Live from The Bahamas: Interview with Captain Florian from S/V Purpose

Captain Florian, welcome back! This is your second time offering charters in The Bahamas—what brought you back?
We are so excited to be back—The Bahamas is a favourite for us! There’s something truly special about this vast paradise: its lovely people, the incredible clear water in every shade of blue stretching to the horizon, and one fine white sandy beach after another.
It’s a seemingly endless chain of small islands, dotted with a few welcoming villages and otherwise offering total seclusion. The sailing conditions are ideal, with steady easterly winds and calm waters sheltered from the open ocean.
Underwater, it’s just as vibrant—turtles, rays, colourful fish, and coral are all easy to spot while snorkeling. And there’s no shortage of fun sights and activities either: mangrove rivers, wide sandbanks, the famous swimming pigs, underwater sculptures and plane wrecks, hikes, caves—the list goes on.
You’ve sailed in a lot of beautiful places. What stands out to you about The Bahamas compared to other destinations?
If I have to pick one, it would probably be the expansive shallow waters that create such incredible water colours. There are really few other places where nature has sculpted such a unique seascape—the water shines in turquoise as far as the eye can see. In fact, the name Bahamas is said by some to be derived from the Spanish term baja mar, meaning shallow sea. Even astronauts have described the Bahamas as the most vibrant sight from space.
For someone who’s never experienced it, can you paint a picture of what it’s like sailing through these waters on a 50-foot catamaran?
Expect to glide through glowing waters in full comfort, with a crew delivering the highest standards of service. Along the way, you’ll pass one empty paradise beach after another and countless natural wonders—each one inviting you to stop and explore.
Guest Experience & Highlights:
What are some of your favorite anchorages or spots to take guests in The Bahamas, and why?
There are certainly many moments of awe as we immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the Bahamas—and we find ourselves in awe again and again.
What we love most is seeing our guests truly relax, letting go of their busy lives, reconnecting as friends or family, and feeling inspired by the beautiful places we share with them.
When we hear things like, “You made us feel right at home,” or “We knew it would be amazing, but never this amazing,”or even “Trip of a lifetime,”—that’s when we know we’ve fulfilled our purpose.
People always talk about the water in The Bahamas. Is it really as incredible as the photos make it look?
Absolutely—and the photos don’t even do it justice. The colours are so expansive, it almost feels unreal, like someone dyed the water. Even at night, when the moon is shining, the water is so clear we can see the shadow of our catamaran resting on the sandy sea bed below.
What kind of activities or experiences do guests love the most—besides just lounging on the deck with a cocktail?
That, of course, depends on the guests—we always tailor the itinerary and suggest activities based on their preferences and how active they like to be.
Some favourite tend to include snorkeling around the many reefs to admire the underwater life, exploring mangrove rivers and lagoons on paddle boards or our clear kayak, walking up small island hills to take in the views, or strolling along secluded beaches in search of treasures from the sea.
For adults, it might also mean sampling local cuisine at selected restaurants, while kids often enjoy trying out our collection of water toys. And sometimes, it’s simply about relaxing and chatting with friends, soaking in the peace of it all.
Why The Bahamas:
In your opinion, why should The Bahamas be on everyone’s sailing bucket list?
Meandering through the unique land and seascapes of the Bahamian islands is something every sailor should experience at least once in their lifetime.
Yes, there are many stunning tropical destinations around the world—with great weather, turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and a laid-back island vibe—but the natural spectacle the Bahamas offers is truly unparalleled, especially being so close to the U.S.
To find anything that really compares, you’d have to look much farther afield—places like the South Pacific or the Indian Ocean.
There are hundreds of islands here—how do you even start choosing where to go on a charter?
Luckily, you’ll have us—an experienced crew—to help design your dream itinerary! We’ve scouted and tested just about every nook and cranny of the Bahamas, and we’d love to create a truly memorable experience for you, tailored to your preferences.
Of course, we have a recommended itinerary that covers all the main highlights, but every trip ends up looking a little different depending on our guests’ interests. We’re also flexible throughout the journey and can easily adjust based on the group’s mood each day—there are plenty of great options to choose from.
How easy or hard is it to get off the beaten path here and find those quiet, untouched places?
Very easy—that’s one of the great advantages of the Bahamas. It’s full of all kinds of anchorages, big and small, tucked between tiny islands or out in wide-open waters, and it never feels crowded.
With so many options to stay and explore, and countless empty beaches waiting to be discovered, choosing where to escape can be a delightful challenge!
Challenges & Real Talk:
It all sounds amazing, but every destination has its challenges—what are some of the trickier parts of chartering in The Bahamas?
I would say the main challenge is knowing when it’s best to go. We believe the ideal time is from mid-May to mid-August.
While the Bahamas is beautiful in winter, temperatures tend to be mild and might not be warm enough for most people to fully enjoy the water. Cold fronts can also pass through during winter, bringing low temperatures and strong winds for a few days.
From June to November is hurricane season. Fortunately, the Bahamas are historically safe from hurricanes until August, with the risk becoming more significant only starting in late August.
This leaves us with a sweet spot from mid-May to mid-August for the best sailing experience.
Are there things first-time charter guests should be aware of or plan around when choosing The Bahamas?
A key attraction of the Bahamian islands, such as the Exumas, is their seclusion. This remoteness means nightlife and shopping opportunities on land are limited. The entire Exumas island chain has only three small villages between Nassau at one end and Georgetown at the other.
That said, Nassau offers plenty in terms of nightlife and shopping, and we also love setting up onboard parties for our guests!
Dining out in the Exumas is possible at a few local restaurants and some high-end resorts. While the selection is limited, the quality is generally excellent. For guests who want to enjoy the local cuisine, we offer half-board rates as an option.
How do you handle weather and navigation through the shallows—especially with a larger catamaran?
The shifting shallow seabed and, in some places, strong currents do make navigating the Bahamas an exciting and ever-changing challenge. But with careful planning, we can reach even the most difficult spots.
We’ve scouted nearly every possible route and anchorage, so we never find ourselves in a tight spot—quite literally! Fortunately, despite the size of our catamaran, its relatively shallow draft means we have very few limitations on where we can go.
Wrap-up & Personal Perspective:
What’s one thing most people don’t realize about The Bahamas until they’ve been here?
Many who haven’t been may simply see the Bahamas as a typical holiday destination close to the US—unaware of just how special and vast this paradise truly is. When people think of the Bahamas, the first places that often come to mind are the cruise ship port and resort town of Nassau or the nearby Bimini Islands off Florida.
However, the Bahamas actually cover an area larger than all the Eastern Caribbean islands combined. The real treasures lie further afield, like the extraordinary Exumas island chain. And there’s truly no better way to explore these hidden gems than by boat!
If you could describe a perfect day on charter here in just a few words—what would that look like?
Wake up to a colorful breakfast, take a refreshing morning swim in crystal-clear waters, or stroll along a secluded white sandy beach. Catch the wind for an easy two-hour sail to our next destination while soaking in the breathtaking views of passing islands and vibrant water hues.
Gently snorkel around a lively coral reef before indulging in a delicious lunch. Then, set out on a paddleboard, clear kayak, or dinghy tour to explore a serene lagoon, winding mangrove river, or pristine sandbank.
Reenergize with a selection of snacks as we sail for an hour to our final destination of the day. Grab a cocktail and head up to the flybridge to watch the sunset together.
End the day celebrating with a three-course gourmet dinner prepared by our onboard chef, all while marveling at the dazzling night sky.
