Odyssea’s Central agency
Yacht owners today seek more than just a luxurious asset sitting idle in a marina. They aim to maximize their investment’s potential, recognizing the importance of returns, reducing operating costs, and exploring options like rental income or shared ownership. In a competitive market, making a yacht work for its owner—rather than the other way around—is essential for adding value and securing a worthwhile investment.
The Crewed Yacht charter Business
The charter industry includes several key players involved in the marketing of luxury crewed yachts, beyond just the charter yacht itself. Here is a quick overview that provides insight into these essential roles and their contributions to the industry:
-
Charter Brokers source clients seeking sailing vacations and match them with suitable yachts. They will look for yachts through one of the dedicated listing websites and once they sourced the right fit for their client’s expectation, they will make the necessary arrangements with the yacht’s Central Agent. The industry standard for their commission is 15% of the charter fee.
-
The primary role of a Central Agency is to promote yachts to the Charter Brokers. They also keep the booking calendar up-to-date, and act as a liaison between yacht owners/operators and Charter Brokers. They may also act as clearinghouse, holding payments into their client accounts for charter fees and APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance).
-
Central Listing Agencies primarily operate on a membership fee basis. They serve as platforms where Yacht Owners entrust their Central Agent to list their yachts to make them available to Brokers. The four major Central Listing Agencies are Central Yacht Agent, YachtFolio, Charter Index, and Nausys.
-
Charter Associations such as CYBA (Charter Yacht Brokers Association) or MYBA (The Mediterranean Yacht Broker Association) do set standards for Charter Brokers, Central Agents and other industry professionals. They also provide education and training opportunities for members, and work to promote the yacht charter industry to the public. Both CYBA and MYBA play an essential role in promoting high standards of professionalism and ethical behavior within the yacht charter industry.
